Hot Tub Winterization Tips

Hot Tub Winterization Tips

The winter weather has hit and for some of us – earlier than we expected. Make sure your hot tub is in top condition to “weather” the weather. Here are a few tips to keep in mind:

Make Sure Your Cover is at Peak Performance Level

Check for signs of wear and tear-make sure the seal is still tight and intact, so heat doesn’t escape. If you see signs of sagging, fading or cracking, it may be time for a replacement.

Protect Your Cover

Applying a protectant spray like 303 Protectant to the outside of the cover can help preserve it and keep it from becoming cracked in the first place. Applying 303 Protectant to the underside of your cover can help prevent mildew.

Remove Snow from the Spa Cover Before Large Amounts Accumulate

Condensation might occur around the cover locks which could create ice build-up. To remove, splash with warm water; don’t try to pry the ice off. Wind straps are also good to keep the cover tightly secured during high wind storms.

If You’re Going Away for a Few Days Remember These Tips

  • Adjust the pH according to your Owner’s Manual.
  • Sanitize the water with a Chlorine-Free Oxidizer according to instructions.
  • Lock down the cover to prevent access.
  • Upon your return, balance the pH and sanitize the water prior to using.

Keep Your Sauna in Tip Top Shape

AllSpa Sauna Care Services

When you own a sauna, it’s easy to hop in and have a great session. But, it’s also easy to let the little bit of maintenance you should do slide to the bottom of your “to do” list. While there’s not much to do to take care of your sauna, there are some things to do to keep your sauna in great shape for years to come.

Clean the Glass

Dust can build up on glass and become hard to clean over time when it’s heated and cooled over and over. Best to clean the glass inside your sauna every couple of weeks. It gives you a better outlook on your world, too!

Lightly Sand the Benches

If sweat stains remain on the benches after sauna sessions, a little rubbing with fine sandpaper can reduce their appearance. For more significant staining, consider purchasing “Sauna Clean” which is designed to clean wood surfaces in the sauna.

Clean the Floor

Sweaty feet can turn into stinky floors over time. If the floor is cement, tile, or linoleum, it’s fine to use bleach to clean and disinfect. A quick light mopping or wipe down with a damp cloth will do the trick.

Check Backrests and Headrests

If you notice staining on backrests and headrests, follow the same cleaning regimen suggested for the benches. A towel against a backrest, or behind your head will prevent sweat stains from occurring.

Clean Buckets, Ladles and Drip Pans

If you have a traditional steam sauna, be sure to clean buckets, ladles and drip pans regularly. To prevent staining and rust, use a CLR (calcium/lime/rust) type cleaner to prevent marks from getting locked in by the heat. Be sure to empty your bucket after each session and place it outside the sauna to air dry.

Clean Your Filters

Filters are the hardest working part of your tub, keeping the water clean, and the heater efficient, so your tub stays hot and ready to go. Do more than just hose them off. Use a filter cleaner to give them a good thorough cleansing. Clean your filters monthly, and remember—filters should be replaced every 2-2½ years.

To help your cover ward off the coming rains, be sure to clean your cover with soap and water and rinse thoroughly. Spa Owners Beware!

AllSpa Service & Repair

If you’re the owner of a hot tub or swim spa, you probably spent a lot of time researching brands, talking to friends and reading reviews before you decided to invest your hard-earned money. To help you in the water care selection process, here are a few things you should always avoid:

Buying off Brand Chemicals from a “Big Box” Store

Big box stores may offer hot tub owners the discount shopping they’ve been looking for. Unfortunately, cheaper isn’t always better. Plus, with one salesperson handling a variety of products – fertilizer, lumber, light bulbs, etc., expertise with spa supplies is far from guaranteed

Using Pool Chlorine for Your Hot Tub

Chlorine for hot tubs and swimming pools are not the same product! Pool chlorine is the wrong mix for a hot tub. The active ingredient is typically sodium hypochlorite, which is not good for hot tubs! Hot tub chlorine should always be 99% sodium dichlor – the right mix of chlorine to kill all bacteria in 100-plus degree water.

Mixing Multiple Brands of Water Care Products

Using multiple brands for your hot tub that have different combinations of chlorine, shock and pH stability only creates additional water quality problems and more work keeping your water balanced.

Trying Something “New”

Some hot tub dealers will try and sell you something based on the brand of hot tub they sell, or a promotion or contest from a chemical company. Water care is the most important part of keeping your hot tub in good shape for the long haul. Don’t suddenly try something odd or new that could create new issues for you down the road!

AllSpa’s core product line for hot tubs is SpaGuard

This line of products, made by BioGuard, has a lengthy history in the pool & hot tub world – over 40 years! Not only do we know their products will perform well in your hot tub and do what they need to do, they also won’t cause any adverse side effects. And, all their products work together harmoniously to keep your hot tub water safe and crystal clear.

How To Get Healthy Spa Water

AllSpa Hot Tub Services

Hooray, it’s summer! If you’re one of those people getting ready to ramp up your hot tub use, here are five important things to remember to keep your hot tub water healthy for soaking:

Never soak in cloudy water

A number of things can cause cloudy hot tub water, most importantly, not having enough sanitizer in the tub to prevent bacteria growth. Other things that can cause cloudy water include: too much calcium hardness, pH that’s too high and detergents from swimsuits.. Use a sanitizer after every soak and activate the clean cycle.

Keep your hot tub filters in excellent shape

If you haven’t replaced your hot tub filters in the last two years, you likely need new ones. If you don’t need a new filter, the ones you have need to be cleaned monthly. Pick up a quality filter cleaner today at one of our showrooms and be sure your filters are in excellent cleaning condition.

Make sure your ozone system is working

Ozone is a terrific way to keep water healthy. But even good ozone systems typically last for about three years before they quit producing ozone. Call our Service Center to talk about testing your ozone system and see if it’s still working properly. If not, consider a new ozone system today.

Test your water!!

You’ve invested in a terrific hot tub. You owe it to yourself to keep it in great shape. Water that’s out of balance causes skin irritation, burning eyes, odor, and eats up sanitizer that you need to kill bacteria. Out of balance water ruins parts that are not cheap to replace! Testing water isn’t hard, thanks to simple test strips that do the task in seconds.

If you’re just too busy to do all of this…why not take advantage of our Drain and Fill Service?

Clean Your Filters for Healthy Hot Tub Water

AllSpa Hot Tub Service

Filters are designed to keep hot tub and swim spa water clean and free of bacteria, body oils and other organisms introduced by bodies during a soak or swim. There’s only so much, however, that a filter can do without your help.

Do the following to keep your water healthy and clean for hot tub & swim spa use:

Clean Filters Thoroughly at Least Once a Month

Rinsing with a garden hose is not enough! Filters must be cleaned with a degreasing agent. The filter cleaner that we sell is formulated to do the best job on hot tub and swim spa filters.

Rinse Filters

Rinse filters in-between cleanings or after using your hot tub or swim spa when the bather load is high.
Extra bodies equals more “stuff” entering your tub or swim spa. Rinsing helps keep your water cleaner longer, and ensures nothing clogs the filters that can interrupt filtration & heating functions.

Keep Your Water Balanced

Balanced water is important for effective filtration. When water is out of balance, hardness or other water care products can precipitate out of the water and coat filter sleeves, inhibiting their filtering ability.

Consider Replacing Regular Filters with Tri-X Filters If You Have a Hot Spring Spa

Tri-X is exclusive filter technology only available to Hot Spring Spa owners. Made of a dense filter media, these filters more than double the filtration of your hot tub, and last 4 years minimum!

If you’re just too busy to do all of this…why not take advantage of our Drain and Fill Service?

Advice for New Homeowners with a Spa

Hot Tub Winterization Tips

“Moving into a new home is exciting. It’s even more exciting if the home has a hot tub,” said Sue Rogers, president of AllSpa. Most new homeowners are eager to start soaking, but the service experts at AllSpa say there are at least 5 things people should consider doing before they start enjoying that hot tub.

Get New Filters

Filters are the hardest working part of a hot tub. Investing in a new set of filters right away is one of the easiest ways to start your soaking experience in clean water.

Do a Complete Flush

One of the best things people can do is flush the spa. Silk Balance makes a terrific product called Clean Start. When added to the hot tub water, it will strip any biofilm out of the hot tub plumbing and parts, and sanitize the whole system at the same time.

Get a Hot Tub Tune Up

AllSpa will send one of their licensed technicians to go through the entire unit and make sure things are in excellent working condition. Click here to learn more.

Get a New Hot Tub Cover

Most of the time a hot tub inherited in a home purchase hasn’t had its hot tub cover changed in quite some time. If a new cover is needed, be sure to get one that fits properly and helps with energy efficiency.

Get Good Advice on Water Care

Homeowners should be careful about dumping “stuff” into their hot tub that they may not need! Ask your hot tub service professional to avoid using a lot of the “old school” chemicals.

Timely Tips for Crystal Clear Spa Water

Soaking in a hot tub is one of the best things you can do to relax, reduce stress and share quiet time with loved ones. Here we offer up four tips to help make sure your water is always crystal clear when you head out for that soak.

Sanitize!

Be a good hot tub steward: keep you water sanitized! If you have an ACE Salt Water System, the terrific news is the system, set properly for your soaking habits, will do the job for you. If you run your tub on chlorine, you need to add at least half an ounce after each use and shock once a week.

Test Your Water

Sanitizer doesn’t have a chance to kill what it needs to if you don’t keep your water balanced. Testing your water weekly is key. Your alkalinity and pH levels need to be in the correct range. If your pH is low, it will eat up your residual sanitizer in no time and cloudy smelly water will soon pay you a visit.

Clean Your Filters

Filters can only do their optimal job cleaning and capturing refuse if they are clean. Clean your filters monthly with a good filter cleaner and remember filters do not last for life! Regular filters should be changed every 2-3 years, and Tri-X filters should be changed every -5 years.

Replace Your Silver Ion Cartridge

Silver helps neutralize bacteria. If you use a silver cartridge in your tub as part of the system for sanitizing, remember that it only lasts about four months, regardless of how often you use the tub. How old is your sliver cartridge? If you need a new one, just give us a call.

If you’re just too busy to do all of this…why not take advantage of our Drain and Fill Service?

Our team can tackle the job, get your tub refilled and your water balanced and ready for your enjoyment. It’s a nice treat and you’ll be thrilled with the results!

AllSpa Wins Angie's List Super Service Award

“Receiving this award is significant,” said Sue Rogers, president of AllSpa. “That’s because Angie’s List Super Service Award winners must meet strict eligibility requirements, which include an “A” rating in overall grade, recent grade, and review period grade.”

Most people don’t spend a lot of time thinking about their hot tub, swim spa or pool until it’s time to use it. But doing a complete diagnostic inspection or checking on water quality just before swimming or soaking is a recipe for disappointment. As automated as many of these outdoor recreational products are, they all still need regular maintenance. Scheduling a pre-season check-up is always recommended.

Choosing the right company to service or repair a hot tub, pool or swim spa is critical to enjoying all the benefits of hydrotherapy. “People have enough to worry about these days and keeping their recreational water clean, fresh and ready to enjoy shouldn’t be one of them,” commented Rogers.

In addition to helping consumers all over Oregon and Southwest Washington, AllSpa is the trusted service department at Oregon Hot Tub and Jacuzzi Hot Tubs of Portland and is trade certified. That means they’ve been independently audited and found to comply with strict procedures and guidelines.

How to Detail Your Spa

AllSpa Services

Here are 4 easy ways to detail your hot tub to keep it clean and looking amazing!

Deep Clean and Sanitize with Clean Start

We love this product! From the makers of Silk Balance, this incredible liquid can clean and sanitize your entire hot tub. It will strip any biofilm from your tub’s plumbing and parts (the areas you could never get to) and sanitize your entire tub. You’ll be confident that your tub is clean, bacteria free and fresh when you refill it. Give it a try!

Get New Filters

Filters are the hardest working item of your tub. They provide good flow to the heater and circulation system to make sure the tub can get up to temperature and make sure to capture all the “stuff” we leave behind in the water while soaking. Make sure you are giving your filters a good cleaning every month with filter cleaner. Filters really should be replaced every 2-3 years regardless of use.

Clean and Condition Your Pillows

It’s important to remove your hot tub pillows and clean behind them. It’s a secret place dirt can build up that a lot of folks ignore. Clean them with soap and water and rinse thoroughly. Give them a quick treatment of 303 Protectant to keep them supple.

Clean Your Cover

Your cover can easily get mildew building up along the seams and near the zipper for both the halves of the cover. Clean the inside of your cover with soap and water once you’re done and let air dry before putting back on the tub. The exterior of your cover should also be cleaned with soap and water and rinsed thoroughly. Use 303 Protectant on the exterior to add some UV protection.

If you’re just too busy to do all of this…why not take advantage of our Drain and Fill Service?

Our team can tackle the job, get your tub refilled and your water balanced and ready for your enjoyment. It’s a nice treat and you’ll be thrilled with the results!
